Why Web Design Prices Vary So Much Between Companies

Web design prices vary between companies because each one is pricing a different website, not because one is expensive and another is cheap. The sentence “I need a website for my company” is not enough to price against, so every supplier assumes a different scope and quotes that.

The pricing-gap episode from the Arqam Web series on YouTube. The video is in Arabic.

Why the same request produces numbers this far apart

The spread in web design prices starts here. Send the same sentence to three companies and three different projects come back. The first assumed five pages on an existing design system. The second assumed a custom design plus copywriting. The third assumed a bilingual store wired to a courier. The numbers differ because the product differs, and comparing them without a written spec compares things that are not alike.

That is the whole point about web design prices: the problem is in the request, not in the quotes.

What moves web design prices
Six items that move a website price more than the look does.

Decide your pages before you ask about web design prices

The first thing that moves the number is how many page types there are, not how many pages. Twenty service pages on one layout cost less than five pages on five layouts. The minimum you should specify:

  • The homepage
  • One service page, and how many services will repeat on it
  • The portfolio, and whether each project gets its own page or it is just a gallery
  • About
  • Contact, and where each submission goes and to whom
  • A blog, and whether you need it from day one

The features that actually change the cost

Looks move web design prices far less than functionality does. Every row below adds build time, testing time and maintenance:

Feature What it adds to the build
Quote request form Custom fields, validation, delivery to email or a CRM
Appointment booking Calendar, availability, confirmation, reminders, cancellation
Online payment Gateway, accounts, failure-path testing, refunds
More than one language Double the content, separate URL structure, hreflang, RTL layout
Customer accounts Signup, login, password reset, permissions, data protection
Courier integration Shipping cost calculation, order tracking, status sync
ERP or accounting integration Stock, price and invoice synchronisation

Those seven rows explain most of the gap in web design prices between two quotes for the same business. And there are items that never appear in the quote but do appear on the invoice later: who writes the copy, who shoots the photography, and who maintains the site after handover.

Three scopes behind one request

To see how web design prices take shape, take a single request: “a website for a contracting company”. Three scopes are possible, and all three are correct answers to the same sentence:

  • Scope one. Five pages on an existing design system, copy supplied by the client, a contact form, one language, delivered and done.
  • Scope two. Custom design, a page per service, a page per portfolio project, copywriting, launch SEO setup, three months of maintenance.
  • Scope three. All of the above plus two languages, customer accounts for tracking project status, an internal system integration and a reporting dashboard.

The gap between the first and the third is a multiple, and the reason is not design quality. It is how much gets built. Comparing web design prices without fixing the scope compares different things.

The cheapest-quote trap

Low web design prices carry a familiar trap: the owner picks the lowest number, then discovers mid-build that things they assumed were obvious are absent. No copy is written, no speed work is included, there is no Arabic version, maintenance after handover is a separate line. They pay the difference piece by piece, end up above the middle quote they turned down, and hold a half-finished site on an extended schedule.

This does not mean the dearest is best. It means a number without a spec says nothing. The line items are broken down in how much a website costs in Egypt.

A ready spec to send to every company

Copy these points, fill them in once, and send the same text to every supplier. The comparison then runs value against value instead of number against number:

  1. Business and audience. What you sell, to whom, in which markets.
  2. The website goal. The action you want a visitor to take.
  3. Page types. The list above, with how many times each type repeats.
  4. Features needed. From the table, marking what is deferred to phase two.
  5. Languages. One or two, and who translates.
  6. Content and photography. Who writes, who shoots, and whether you already have a brand identity.
  7. After handover. Support window, monthly maintenance, admin panel training.
  8. Ownership. Whose name the domain and hosting are registered under.
  9. Deadline. Whether a date is tied to an event or a season.

Sent this way, web design prices become comparable for the first time. A company that answers this spec line by line is worth comparing. A company that answers with one number and no detail is asking you to trust it without information.

What to ask about every quote

  • What exactly does the number include, and what does it exclude?
  • How many page types does it cover, and what does an extra type cost?
  • Is the design custom or a template, and will I see a design before any code?
  • How long is the support window and what does it cover?
  • Can I see a live site you built for a business close to mine?
  • Whose name will the domain and hosting be registered under?

That last question reveals more than the rest. For a longer checklist before you choose, see the web design and development page and the published packages on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do web design prices vary so much?

Because the request is undefined, so each company assumes a different scope and prices that. The number of page types, features such as payment, booking and multiple languages, who writes the copy, and what happens after handover all move the number before the design is even discussed.

Does a higher price mean higher quality?

Not necessarily. A higher price can mean a wider scope, a bigger team or a longer warranty, and it can also mean a higher margin. The only way to judge is one written spec sent to everyone, then comparing what each quote includes line by line.

How do I spot an incomplete quote?

Look for four items: who writes the copy, whether speed and security work are included, how long support lasts after handover, and whose name the domain sits under. Any of those missing from the quote will show up as an extra cost later.

Can the project be split to reduce cost?

Yes, and for most projects that is the practical answer. Start with the pages and features that serve the goal directly, and defer customer accounts, a second language or external integrations to a second phase. What matters is that the foundation allows additions without a rebuild.

What is the difference between a company’s quote and a freelancer’s?

A freelancer is cheaper and faster on small projects. A company gives you a team of specialists, a contract and continuity when someone is away. The difference shows after handover: who you call six months later if the site breaks or you need a change.

Get a written spec before you compare

The best way to handle the spread in web design prices is to enter the comparison holding a spec. We write yours in a single session, and you take it with you and send it to whoever you like, even if you decide not to go ahead with us.
